The Island That Changes You
There is a moment, somewhere between the spray of the speedboat and the first glimpse of Inhaca's white shoreline, when Maputo's noise simply disappears. The Indian Ocean opens up wide, the colour of the water shifts from grey-green to an impossible turquoise, and something in your chest loosens. That is Inhaca Island doing what it has always done: reminding you that Mozambique keeps some of its finest things just a short trip offshore.
Inhaca lies roughly 24 kilometres east of Maputo Bay. It is the largest island in the bay, home to a small fishing community, one of Africa's oldest marine biology research stations, and some of the most pristine coral reefs in the southern hemisphere. It is not a resort island. There are no infinity pools or manicured swim-up bars. What you find instead is something rarer: a living, breathing piece of coastal Mozambique, largely untouched and deeply beautiful.
What to See and Do
Santa Maria Peninsula and its coral gardens. The northern tip of Inhaca shelters a reef system that snorkellers return to again and again. The water is shallow enough to feel safe, clear enough to watch parrotfish graze across the coral, and warm enough that you will stay in far longer than you planned. This stop is a centrepiece of Mussiro's Inhaca Island Day Tour, which departs Maputo by speedboat and includes guided snorkelling time at Santa Maria before continuing to the island itself.
Inhaca Village. A walk through the village is a quiet lesson in island life. Wooden dhows rest on the sand between tides, fishermen mend nets in the shade, and the smell of grilled fish drifts from the open-air kitchens along the waterfront. Lunch here, as included in the day tour, is one of those meals you describe to people back home for months.
Portuguese Island (Ilha dos Portugueses). A short boat crossing from Inhaca brings you to this tiny, uninhabited strip of sand. The beach is immaculate, the snorkelling around its edges is excellent, and the silence is total. The Inhaca Island Day Tour wraps up its afternoon here, which turns out to be a perfect way to end a day in the sun.
Marine biology station and the lighthouse. For those who like a little structure with their relaxation, the Eduardo Mondlane University marine research station is open to visitors and gives fascinating context to the reef you have just been swimming above. The old lighthouse at the island's highest point rewards the uphill walk with panoramic views across the bay toward Maputo's skyline.
Going Deeper: The Two-Day Option
A single day on Inhaca is wonderful. Two days is transformative. Mussiro's Inhaca Island 2-Days Tour lets you stay overnight on the island, which means waking up to a sunrise over the Indian Ocean with no boat schedule to chase. The second day opens up the island's quieter corners: mangrove walks, early-morning swimming before the day-trippers arrive, and long unhurried lunches. If your schedule allows it, this is the version to book.
Best Time to Visit
Inhaca is warm year-round, but the sweet spot for a visit is April through November. The rains ease off by April, the sea settles, and visibility for snorkelling is at its best. July and August bring slightly cooler breezes, which make beach days deeply comfortable without ever feeling cold.
If you are visiting between August and October, consider pairing your trip with Mussiro's Watching Humpback Whales tour on the Mozambique coast. Humpback whales migrate through these waters during those months, and seeing them breach from a small boat is one of those experiences that earns its own paragraph in any travel story.
The rainy season runs roughly from December through March. The island remains accessible, but choppy seas and lower visibility can affect the snorkelling.
How to Get There
The standard route is by speedboat from Maputo's Catembe ferry terminal or from the main harbour. The crossing takes between 45 minutes and one hour depending on sea conditions. Mussiro handles all logistics, including hotel pick-up in Maputo, so there is nothing to organise on your end beyond showing up.
A Few Practical Notes
- Bring cash. Card machines are scarce on the island.
- Sun protection is non-negotiable. The equatorial sun over open water is intense; reef-safe sunscreen protects both your skin and the coral.
- Book ahead for the 2-day tour. Accommodation on the island is limited and fills quickly in the high season.
- Snorkelling gear is included in Mussiro's Inhaca tours, so you do not need to pack your own.
Why Inhaca Stays With You
Most destinations leave you with photographs. Inhaca leaves you with a feeling. It is the particular combination of warm water, unhurried pace, and the sense that the world is both smaller and larger than you remembered. Whether you spend a day or two nights on this island, you will understand very quickly why so many travellers who come to Mozambique make Inhaca their single non-negotiable stop.
