A private speed boat will pick you up at the Maputo Marina (09.00 AM) and will drop you off in Inhaca Island village. A short snack and hot coffee will be served, in order to pick up energy for the awesome walk that waits for us.
| Stage 1: Inhaca village to Marine biology station – 1 to 1,5 hours.
An interior sand road will connect these two places. Expect nice views and dense forest around us, providing interesting sounds and smells. It is an opportunity to get to know a bit more about how the communities ensure their living on the island. Once we arrive at the station, we will visit the museum and understand a bit more about the historic importance of this infrastructure in the conservation of the island and the bay of Maputo. By observing the exhibit, you will learn more about Inhaca biodiversity, ecology, and diversity – it is also a great chance to rest your legs for a while.
| Stage 2: Marine Biology station to Saco da Inhaca – 2,5 to 3 hours.
We will use the beach as our track now. If the tide is low enough, amaze yourself with the sea stars show that this specific point of the island provides (blue, yellow and red ones), paint the wet sand of magnificent and strong colors. As we walk along this part of the island, we will pass shallow water areas, mangroves, and low tide puddles. Some fisherman uses these tides to fix their fishing nets or their boats, so if we are lucky, we can interact with them.
We will then reach the hard, but most beautiful part of the walk. The rocky area of the island. Very sharp rock formations hide the most beautiful sceneries and locations of the island. The walk is hard, and you will need to be careful with cuts and unstable or moving rocks, so knowing where you step is important. At a certain part of this stage, we will face an outstanding and rare beater wall, a place where they nest and are active – several species of these birds can be seen here. Along this part of the walk, you can also see other bird species and the vegetation diversity of the island: the huge mangrove trees and water berries paint the route along the way. The “succulent gardens or patches” will also be frequent, showing you the resilience and beauty of nature. Expect sand, rock, water, mud and a lot of adventure and action – do not worry because we will have a backup boat on this more sensitive stage of the walk.
| Stage 3: Saco da Inhaca to Ponta Torres (with a boat) – 15 minutes boat ride
We will then arrive to saco da inhaca mangrove area and our boat will take you to Ponta Torres, the area where we will camp out for the night. The boat will run 2 or 3 of these transfers, depending on the size of the group.
Ponta Torres has awesome natural pools to do snorkeling and it will be one of the most beautiful sunsets you can find in Mozambique. It is time to enjoy a nice sunset drink and relax, because a good and tasty dinner will be served. This is where you will try the great seafood meals from the island. The night will be spent on one of our light and fresh tents: after the physical challenge allows yourself to be rocked by the ocean sound.
We will start the day with a good and complete breakfast. At around 9 Am, we will start walking towards Saco da Inhaca (Inhaca bag), a tidal system made of mangroves that form a huge pocket to the “guts of the island”. It is amazing to walk here and we will need low tides, so waiting a bit can be necessary – it is fine, because waiting for a bit means a dip in the water to cool ourselves. These mangrove systems have an amazing variety of vegetation and bird life. Some sections will be walked with water towards our ankles and knees, and it is awesome to see such beauty in this part of the island. We will end our walk in the village where a spectacular lunch will be served, along with some cold drinks.
Our boat will be waiting for us, so we can return to Maputo.
Our awesome weekend is completed, but do not panic, because this is just the beginning of amazing walking experiences in Inhaca Island with Mabeco Tours and Mussiro Trips.
