The trips to Bazaruto islands, tailor made, day trips or longer, are one of the most popular things to do in Mozambique and one of its main welcome cards.
The archipelago is composed of 5 islands, Benguerra, Bazaruto, Magaruque, Santa Carolina and Bangue.
There are more than 160 species of birds, but the great attraction is the marine fauna, with an extraordinary community of dugongs, Bazaruto is a natural aquarium.
You can stay in one of the islands, but you can also stay in Vilanculos, a small fishing village on the mainland. In Vilanculos there are numerous accommodation options, you must choose well.
The food is fantastic, the people are very friendly, and the nature is absolutely stunning.
There are several ways to visit the islands and several operators that can take you. The island of Santa Carolina is, in our opinion, the most beautiful, but Benguerra and Bazaruto are not far behind. The ideal is to take a boat trip that goes through more than one island and, in order to enjoy quality time in each one, it is ideal to have at least 2 days dedicated only to island hopping.
The beaches of Vilanculos, although they cannot be compared to the beaches of the islands of the bazaruto archipelago, are also pleasant. Staying in Vilankulos is an option to consider, because it’s cheaper and the local immersion is higher. You can stroll around the village, meet the fishermen, and the traditional way of life.
The choice of restaurants and things to do in Vilanculos is also higher than the one you will find on any island in the archipelago.
Vilanculos has an airport and receives scheduled flights operated by LAM. The trip by car is also a possibility, although long, the landscape is beautiful and has many stops that are worthwhile along the way.
Bazaruto is a destination that is worth even as a unique destination in Mozambique, but we recommend that it be part of a more diversified program. It is relatively easy, and advisable, to mix with Tofo, Maputo and Zinave National Park.
