Most people know only Macaneta's eastern shore, the long ocean beach. This day goes to the other side, where the Incomati River meets the Indian Ocean and the island of Xefina Pequena sits in the estuary. The nature here is wild, rich in birds and monkeys, and the water is calmer than on the ocean side. We leave Maputo in our private boat at around 8am, the exact time set by the tide, and head straight there across the bay, past its islands. Once we land the day is yours: swim, lie in the sun, play ball, walk, run, draw or read. We bring the tables, chairs, shade and a cool box with ice, and the meals and soft drinks are on us. In the afternoon the boat brings you back to Maputo.
